In the 1950's, a safe and valid vaccination was created by Jonas Salk. The inactivated poliovirus Vaccine (IPV) was created through the HeLa cells . It consists of an injected dose of a dead poliovirus which was put into the body so it could build cells that are against the patheogens that cause polio.
During the 1960's, a man named Albert Sabin made an Oral Poliovirus Vaccination (OPV), which used attenuated poliovirus. It was safe and effective as well.
Both vaccines helped decrease the percentage of a person getting Polio, and both contributed to the prgress that we have today.
The United States only uses the IPV from 2000. OPV is still used throughout the world, alnd polio is so close to being eradicated because of these vaccines!
