Much progress has been made ever since the Nineteenth Century, when polio had been causing pandemics and epidemics to break out across the globe, resulting in permanent damage to thousands of people, and many deaths. Thanks to the CDC and its international partners, we have nearly eradicated Polio from the world altogether!
BY THE NUMBERS:
1. The number of worldwide polio cases has fallen from an estimated 350,000 in 1988 to 407 in 2013—a decline of more than 99% in reported cases
2. Four regions of the world are certified polio free—the Americas, Europe, South East Asia and the Western Pacific.
3. On March 27, 2014, the country of India, along with the other 10 countries in the WHO South East Asia Region, was certified polio-free. 80% of the world’s people now live in polio-free areas.
Although many countries are now Polio-free, there are still very few countries whose citizens are still being affected by Polio, due to the contamination around their environment.
Only three Polio-Endemic countries remain:
- Nigeria
